October 4, 2011

I cleared customs at the Blue Water bridge (Port Huron/Sarnia)today and paid my HST on the tail kit.If you plan to bring your kits home to Canada like I did make sure you get Mark at Sonex to fill out a NAFTA form for you and there will be no question about any duty's when you clear customs.

Finally got around to inventorying my tail kit today. The packaging and labeling is excellent and all parts were accounted for.All the parts are machined and drilled for the Onex tail.It appears the only drilling will be the control surfaces. All the skins are pre punched.
I ordered my cleco's and pneumatic riveter through Aircraft Spruce,Cheaper than Wicks and I got them in 2 days from time of order.Love the Brantford Ontario warehouse

HORIZONTAL FORWARD SPAR STRAP
Plans call for a 22.3degree bends so I cut two 2X4's at 12  degrees each and used a 1/2" steel bar for a 1/4" radius. The radius wasn't spelled out in the plans  but at 22Degrees a 1/4" radius should be no problem.
The resultant angle was less than required due to spring back so I used the angled cut-offs from the 2X4's to bend some more angle.Had to do it a bit at a time and check the angle each time until I achieved a perfect bend on both sides when laid against the plans.

Picture
The cut-offs gave me enough space to pull the 22.3 degree angle
This is a 1 ton arbor press and it helps if you add an extension bar to the handle for more leverage. No need for anything bigger than the 1 ton.

Picture
Extension bar added.A 10 year old can pull this now. It should be noted that I used duct tape to hold the part and the 1/2" bar in position.I used a small square to make sure the bar was square to the part before securing with the tape.

As close to 22.3 degrees I will ever get.Yes the part is behind and level with the bottom .

Getting ready to pull rivets

Picture
I first up drilled with #30 on the ends and clecoed the parts together then up drilled from the middle working out to the ends and adding cleco's as I went.
After all the holes were drilled up I dissasembled the parts and deburred both sides of each part using my fingers to determine if any burrs remained. The spar will have to be sanded on the back side where the flash stuck to the metal as the deburring tool will not get all of this.
I then re-clecoed the parts back together in preparation of riveting.

Take Note

Picture
Notice on the drawing the 8 holes that are not to be riveted at this time.Put tape over them just in case you get carried away with your riveting and forget

Pulling my first rivets on the Onex.Woohoo!

Picture
I bought both a hand riveter and a pneumatic one.Good thing. These rivets were pulled with the hand riveter and I can honestly say they might be the last.I couldn't imagine doing the whole plane this way.You would look like Popeye by the time you pulled your last rivet.
The other side will be done tomorrow with the pneumatic.

Oct. 29.2011 Pneumatic riveter wins ,hands down.45psi seemed to work good.
